Both Nicole Cashin and Talia Staines completed the “Distance Double” winning their respective 14 years and 17 years & over age group’s 800m freestyle on Day 2 of the 2024 County Championships, having won their 1500m races the previous weekend.
Swimming the event long course for the first time, Lucia Day finished 4th in the 13 years age group for Girls whilst Jack Canham was awarded the bronze medal in the Boys event.
George Saunders knocked almost 25 seconds off his long course best time to win the 14 year Boys race. Oliver Fenwick reduced his personal best by a similar margin to win the 15 year age group, with Emmanuel Kolobius and Owain Roberts finishing sixth and seventh respectively.
Matt Wright won the 17 years & over 800m, also collecting the Senior Boys championship title whilst Talia’s and Oliver’s times gave them the Senior Girls and Junior Boys silver medals respectively.
Karen MacKenzie, Michelle Neal and Sam Bradley all swam personal Masters lifetime best times at the South East Long Course Master, setting three Beds County and four Club records in the process. Read here for full report.
All five swimmers competing in the 1500m Freestyle which started the 2024 Beds County Championships came home with medals.
Competing over the distance in a long course pool for the first time Nicole Cashin won gold in the Girls’ 14 years’ age group in a time of 20:11.29. In the same age group George Saunders put in a final 100m sprint to finish in third place with a long course debut time of 19:03.10, an agonising 0.08 seconds away from the silver medal position.
Just two seconds separated the first three in the Boys’ 15 years’ event with Olly (Oliver) Fenwick taking the silver in a time of 18:25.10. That time was a personal best long course time by over 37 seconds which also saw him ranked as the second fastest Junior Boy.
Talia Staines and Matt Wright both retained their Senior and 17 years & over titles from 2023 with times of 17:48.72 and 16:53.56 respectively.

The 2023 Open Water East Region Championships saw eight of the Club’s swimmers competing. Spanning a fifty year age range, they enjoyed success at both county and regional level, over distances from 1K to 5K.
Lyla Howard and Talia Staines both qualified for the National Open Water Championships to be held at the end of July, as mentioned in the full report.

A 47 year difference in age but only 37 seconds apart; both Dave & Matt were crowned 200m Fly champions at the 2023 GB Masters.
